“Toll for the brave – the bewildered, the hungry, the weary: Norway their grave.
Blame not them that the fight should miscarry, but forest and snow, the mountain mass
cold and unheeding, these and the foe. Under the trees they lay, bleeding echo of battle receding
till darkness, soft, merciful, slow, its mantle drew over them where – nothing needing,
not ever again – they slept, as they fell, in the snow.”
– E. D, British soldier 1940
